Making sure the dinner reservations to your favorite restaurant are booked, running through the airport to make it to your connecting flight on time, selecting the perfect venue for what must be the most perfect night…waiting on injured or unhealthy patients hand and foot, in order to make sure they get the best possible care. All create unnecessary stress that arises from making sure that everything goes exactly as according to the plan.

Now if dealing with lives of other human beings isn’t stressful enough, working in environments with too few staff can add another dimension to the care setting. It is unfortunate, and also rare nowadays, that we find the words “stress”, “pressure”, or “hectic” absent from a healthcare professionals daily vocabulary.

In fact, over half of healthcare professionals in a recent CareerBuilder survey have reported stress levels that identify as “some stress” or “high stress.” These same respondents also reported that their workloads had increased over the past year and, in fact, 25 percent plan to change jobs in 2014.

However, stress on your healthcare employees can and should be avoided!

It is your job as a healthcare leader to provide the necessary resources and support that your employees need in order to perform their absolute best. To guarantee this level of support healthcare leaders should:

  • Hire the right talent to ensure reduction in turnover and take the load off current employees
  • Be open to working with employees and adjusting their schedules
  • Create a work environment that is more manageable and supportive
  • Review paid time-off policies to allow employees to take the time they need to unwind and recharge
