Ask a Recruiter – Resume Tips and Tricks!

Whether you are a first time travel nurse or have been traveling for years, one important document never changes – your resume! As a recruiter, I always get a ton of questions regarding the formatting of a resume and what information should be on it. “Do I need to list out all my skills? What details do I need to include? How many years back do I need to list jobs for?” Below are some helpful tips for cleaning up and maintaining your resume!

Let’s start off with what information should be listed on your resume, other than your positions. We are talking about information such as certifications, nursing licenses, computer charting experience, & more! List out all active certifications along with their expiration dates. If you are obtaining a new certification – list that also. Be sure to list out ALL nursing licenses you have ever held, whether they are active or not! Sometimes an old license can hold up the process of getting a new state license, and when you are timing your travel assignment around it, you don’t want to have any surprises! Also, list all the computer charting systems you have had experience with (bonus points if you list the hospital or center where you worked on the charting system.) Any other important items like these you can list out at this part of your resume.

Next step is what information you put about your current and previous jobs. There are three main points you want to list for each position!

  1. Name and Location of the Hospital and City/State
  2. Month/Year that you started and ended the position
  3. Unit you worked/Title (ex. Charge Staff RN/PICU)

For extra points, share the items below as some hospitals require this information to get you submitted to a job!

  1. Number of Beds or Rooms in the  unit
  2. Patient Ratio
  3. Specific experience you had on the (floating or other specializations)

Also, don’t forget to provide a managerial reference or two for each position! A popular option is to create a second document with all your references. This is very helpful as many hospitals want references that go back a few years or positions.
