Like other travel nurses, you care for people to improve their health day-in-and-out, but it’s important not to quit caring for yourself. Here are a couple of tips for nurses looking to achieve better health!
Pack a Snack
Like most nurses at work, you’re always busy with barely a minute to spare, and when it comes to snacking, it’s isn’t always as easy as it sounds. However, healthy snacking promotes metabolic benefits, fat loss as well as a healthier heart. We suggest packing foods you can easily put in your pockets or grab on the go:
- Sliced apples and peanut butter
- Baby carrots and hummus
- Cherry tomatoes
- Unsalted Almonds
- Gluten-free pretzels
Take the Stairs
If you are a floor nurse, you’re almost always on your feet. If you’re looking to take your on-the-job health and fitness to the next level, commit to taking the stairs every chance you can. According to British Journal of Sports Medicine, women who walked up and down stairs for 10 minutes a day five-days-a-week, improved their VO2 max (a measure of fitness) by 17 percent within two months. Taking the stairs is just another way for nurses to improve their health on the go.
Sleep. Sleep. Sleep.
Nurses who don’t receive the adequate hours of sleep needed are putting their health as well as their patients’ health at risk. For Travel Nurses on the road or getting used to a new time zone, healthful sleep can be difficult to achieve. However, not getting enough sleep can ultimately have a negative effect on stress levels, fat loss, metabolic levels, and overall performance. To improve the amount of sleep you are getting, try:
- Meditating when you wake-up and before you go to bed
- Napping, mid-day for 20-minutes on your days off
- Avoiding the following 1-hr before bed: eating, watching T.V. and using other electronic devices
